Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Symptoms- Common Signs

By Trevor Johnson

Obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms vary from mild to severe. OCD sufferers are obsessive, meticulous, and sometimes even appear to be "psychotic". OCD is a mental illness that can be effectively treated but not permanently cured. It is important to find the right treatment before it becomes worse.

Perfectionists have similar signs as people with OCD. Having a healthy appetite for reaching perfection can be a positive thing. But if you are obsessing over it repeatedly and cannot find your self accepting imperfection, it may be a sign of OCD. You find your level of stress and anxiety becoming heightened. And you are losing sleep over it. That is a clear sign of OCD. And it is not healthy.

In people with OCD, the brain is stuck on a thought or urge. This stuck thought becomes an obsession. They feel compelled to take on a particular action or behavior. Some OCD sufferers are often seen as psychotic. Stress and anxiety levels can run high.

People who wash their hands repeatedly until they become so dry they bleed are showing symptoms of OCD. It is good to maintain a good hygiene, but if you are doing it to the point that it affects other areas of your life, it can be a problem. Washing your hands ten times in an hour is time-consuming, not to mention energy-consuming. Imagine what else you can be doing with that time.

Speak with your doctor for accurate diagnosis. If you are diagnosed as a sufferer, your doctor will determine the best treatment for you. Though there are no known cures for OCD, treatments haven proven effective.

In mild cases of OCD, it can often be taken care of with exercising and a healthy diet. Stress and anxiety levels are proven to be reduced by exercising on a regular basis. In the more severe cases, psychosurgery may be performed. For all other cases, OCD is treated with oral medication. - 30309
